I don't know about
you, but I have been surfeited these past months with
the word "change." It seems both parties held claim to
that mysterious word. "Change" obviously means so many
things...

I
couldn't believe it. There on a gigantic panoramic
screen were Kodak moments of my life. My life in
aviation. One of the earliest photos showed me sitting
on the running board of an ancient Dodge Cabriolet
automobile. There were three of us...

Recently the
National Transportation Safety Board Bar Association
invited me to Washington, DC. It seems like yesterday
that I attended one of its meetings in Los Angeles. At
the time, I was impressed with its tight security and
professionalism. Alas...

Movie producers
have always been (to this actor/writer) dark clouds
threatening—or at least they were or have been ominous
enemies of the writer and ofttimes the actor. At least
that's the way it was when...

Surely my cat,
Halsey, has the answer. Obviously, Alfie doesn't know
"What's it all about." He never answers my messages,
phone calls or faxes. Either he has some kind of
"cat-pact" with his feline brethren and sisteran, or
he's gotten into some drugs somewhere. I know not what
or where. When I ask him...

I confess. As a
writer, I am, at the very best, lazy. I seem to feel
that inspiration will land upon my desk, unexpected,
serendipitously, magically and without toil. This is a
lazy expectation for writing. Good writing—true
writing—comes from thinking and caring—a lot of caring.
But because I am, by nature, I suspect...

will be missed.” |

Last July—indeed every
July—is a tumultuous month for this addled
actor/writer/pilot, as I indicated in last July's
column. First, the National Aviation Hall of Fame, with
its attendant honored pilots and aviation icons,
followed by EAA in Oshkosh, with its dignitaries and
icons. I am so proud, so gratified and just plain lucky
to be able to fly my trusty Baron...(cont.)

To this
writer/pilot/actor, 2007 was not a happy year. I lost my
younger daughter, Heather, to dreaded cancer. She was a
golden girl—bright, joyful and so full of promise. It
was not as it should be; our children are not supposed
to leave this cruel world before we do. Thank God, she
and I shared many happy adventures in her all-too-brief
life.
