In last month's column, I went back to the late 1950s and described how I met and affixed myself to Tallmantz Aviation. How Frank Tallman and I would fly his World War II open cockpit Stearman biplane over the orange groves of Orange County. How flying took precedence over my then budding film career. And how, on one fateful weekend... (cont.)

Over the years, I've been invited by the U.S. State Department to act as a questionable ambassador of (questionable) good will to various (mostly Eastern bloc) countries. Just why, I'm not sure. It happened during both Republican and Democratic administrations—quite possibly because I've never joined any... (cont.)

One of the earliest photos showed me sitting on the running board of an ancient Dodge Cabriolet automobile. There were three of us: my two cousins, Bill and Norma, ages 6 and 5; and me, age 5....(cont.)

"The Sneaky Subtle Madison Avenue Revolution"
There's a revolution. On Madison Avenue. It's been going on for a year now. Maybe you haven't noticed it. It's so subtle—almost sneaky. At first I didn't believe it. There were no parades or protests. No demonstrations. No announcements. Nothing in the news. But it was on television. Not obvious. But there and growing and more evident. Daily.... (cont.)

ACTOR CLIFF ROBERTSON FLIES TO MOJAVE TO TAKE IN HISTORIC FLIGHT
Published June 21. 2004
The Associated Press

Among the thousands who traveled to the Mojave Desert on Monday to watch the historic flight of the world's first privately financed spacecraft was actor and aviation enthusiast Cliff Robertson, who flew his own plane there from Los Angeles.
"It was a seminal moment in aviation history. As a pilot for 40 years, I was exhausted because I myself felt we had come to a new frontier," Robertson said afterward.
The tough-guy actor has portrayed his share of aviators over the years, including astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the 1976 TV movie "Return to Earth." He won a best actor Oscar for the 1968 film "Charly."

Robertson is also longtime friend of aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, who designed SpaceShipOne, the craft that made aviation history Monday.
"When I talked to him later, his eyes were still burning with excitement and exultation. He was really hyped," the actor recalled.

After SpaceShipOne's landing, Robertson flew on to Beverly Hills to help promote the new "Spider-Man 2" movie.  The  veteran actor plays Ben Parker, uncle of Spider-man's alter-ego, Peter Parker.

HOLLYWOOD VET CLIFF ROBERTSON REPORTS FOR BATTLESHIP DUTY
By Dana Bisbee/Social Scene
Boston Herald, Monday, March 29, 2004

It was an “Uncommon” evening for one Hollywood veteran on Saturday, March 27th, 2004, as Oscar-winning actor Cliff Robertson helped raise more than $70,000 for Battleship Cove’s educational programs.

Cliff Robertson was the star attraction at Uncommon Valor, a benefit at the Museum of Fine Arts for the education programs at Battleship Cove in Fall River. Medal of Honor recipients Thomas Hudner of Concord and Thomas Kelley of South Boston, who is the state's secretary of Veterans Services, were guests of honor at the gala, chaired by Emily DiMaggio of Marion, wife of baseball legend Dom DiMaggio.
In 1963, Robertson portrayed the young John F. Kennedy in the film ``PT 109.'' He also narrated a six-part documentary on the history of the Medal of Honor.

Battleship Cove is the world's largest collection of historic naval vessels, including the battleship Massachusetts and the destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., and the state's official memorial to local service personnel who have died in wars since World War II.
More than 300 people attended the gala, dining in the museum's restaurant and touring the ``Gauguin Tahiti'' exhibit.

Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems President Dan Smith was a corporate sponsor. He and wife Pat attended with 25 guests.
