East Hampton, NY (August 30, 2006) Guild Hall,
celebrating their 75th Anniversary, is presenting
Academy Award Winner Cliff Robertson onstage in the John
Drew Theater, in a retrospective of the Academy Award
winning actor’s expansive career: “Cliff’s Notes: An
Evening with Cliff Robertson,” on Thursday August 31, at
8:00pm. Associate Artistic Director of the Drew Theater,
James Lawson, is producing the event, and will moderate
the program which will include segments on Mr.
Robertson’s achievements as a writer, aviator, and his
stand against corporate corruption, known in the film
industry as “Hollywoodgate.” Tickets are $20.00, $18.00
for members.
Lawson comments: “Mr. Robertson has agreed to discuss
many aspects of his life and career, including his
acquisition of the film rights for ‘Flowers for
Algernon,’ which resulted in the film ‘Charly,’ for
which Mr. Robertson received the Best Actor Academy
Award in 1968. Mr. Robertson’s work as writer and
producer in the critically acclaimed ‘C. W. Coop,’ and
the prophetic quality of “Three Days of the Condor,” in
which Mr. Robertson portrayed CIA agent J. Higgins, who
in a pivotal scene, is asked by Robert Redford’s Joe
Turner: “Do we have plans to invade the Middle East?” an
idea which was unthinkable in 1975 when the film was
released.
These topics and many more, including some time for
audience questions and answers, should make this a
memorable evening.”
Cliff Robertson, one of America’s foremost dramatic
actors, has been applauded on television, stage, and in
over seventy motion pictures. “I am honored to
participate in this program,” Mr. Robertson commented,
“Jim Lawson has planned an exceptional evening, I’m
grateful for all of his highly professional efforts.”
Guild Hall opened to the public in the summer of 1931 as
a gift of philanthropist Mrs. Lorenzo E. Woodhouse.
Designed by architects Aymar Embury II and his wife,
landscape architect Ruth Dean, Guild Hall provided East
Hampton with an art gallery, a theater and meeting place
– the cultural center in the center of culture.
The East End of Long Island is a unique region that has
attracted many diversely talented people such as
artists, writers, musicians, actors, and directors over
the years. They search for and find inspiration in the
natural beauty of the landscape, the magnificent light
and the endless beaches.
Guild Hall’s 75th Anniversary Year has presented many
groundbreaking historic moments-- the opening of the new
Education Center in June, the exhibitions at the Museum,
including an Andy Warhol Exhibition, “Guild Hall
Collects” and “The Barrymores: Hollywood’s First
Family”; the third Cabaret Convention and the John Drew
Theater production of Persephone by Robert Wilson. The
Anniversary Weekend Activities included the Annual
Summer Gala, this year featuring dancing to the Peter
Duchin Orchestra, and a free fun filled community day at
Mulford Farms.
The Season Finale, scheduled for Saturday, September 2,
8 pm is billed as “The Night of 75 Stars.”
